Terms of Service

    Last updated: 15 August 2026

    These terms cover your use of Scentena at scentena.com. The most important part is the section on safety and regulatory responsibility: Scentena helps you design and calculate a fragrance formula, but it cannot make that formula safe or lawful, and it does not take on that responsibility for you.

    Accepting these terms

    By using Scentena you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, do not use the service. If you use Scentena on behalf of an employer, client, or business, you confirm you are allowed to accept these terms for them.

    What Scentena is

    Scentena is a creative and educational perfume-formulation workspace. It generates structured starting formulas from parameters or a brief, lets you build formulas from individual materials and accords, normalises percentages, calculates gram weights for a batch, applies IFRA-aware screening where it holds relevant material data, and can export the result. The Learn library provides background reading, and the about page describes the approach in more detail.

    Scentena is not a laboratory, a safety assessor, a regulatory consultant, or a supplier of materials. Nothing it produces is professional, safety, medical, or legal advice.

    Accounts and account security

    The generator, the builder, and the Learn library can be used without an account. An account is needed to save formulas to a private library, to use AI features, and to hold a subscription. You can register with an email address and password, or sign in with Google or GitHub where the operator has enabled those options.

    Provide accurate details, keep your password and your session private, and do not share an account or let someone else use yours. You are responsible for what happens under your account. Sessions are held in your browser, so log out on shared devices. Tell us promptly at contact@scentena.com if you think your account has been accessed by someone else. Repeated failed logins to an account are temporarily blocked as an anti-abuse measure.

    You may delete your account at any time from account settings. Deletion is permanent: it cancels any active subscription, removes your account record, and removes the formulas saved against it.

    Plans, subscriptions, and billing

    Scentena has a free plan and a paid Pro plan. Your plan determines how many formulas you can keep in your library, how many AI credits your account holds, and which export options are available. The current details of each plan are shown on the pricing page.

    Payment is handled by Stripe. Starting a subscription sends you to Stripe’s hosted checkout, and your card details go to Stripe rather than to Scentena. A Pro subscription renews automatically until it is cancelled. You can cancel from account settings or through the Stripe billing portal; cancelling stops future renewals and Pro access continues until the end of the billing period already paid for, after which the account returns to the free plan. If your subscription ends or a payment stops, formulas above the free plan’s limit may become inaccessible until you upgrade again or remove some.

    AI features are metered in credits. One credit is used per AI request, and a credit is returned if the generation fails. Credits are a usage allowance within the service, not money, and have no cash value. Plan features, credit allowances, and prices may change; the pricing page shows what currently applies. Billing is only available when the operator has configured Stripe. For any billing question, use the contact page.

    Acceptable use

    You agree not to:

    • attempt to access another user’s account, formulas, or data, or any part of the system you are not authorised to use;
    • probe, disrupt, overload, or interfere with the service, or work around rate limits, credit limits, plan limits, or the authentication system;
    • scrape, bulk-download, mirror, or resell the ingredient database, generated output, or Learn content as a competing or derivative dataset or service;
    • use the AI features to produce material that is unlawful, or to request guidance for producing something harmful, deceptive, or dangerous;
    • use Scentena to imply that a formula has been certified, approved, tested, or safety assessed by Scentena;
    • use the service for any unlawful purpose or in breach of anyone else’s rights.

    Your formulas and content

    Scentena does not claim ownership of the formulas, briefs, names, or notes you create. They are yours to use, refine, and produce, subject to these terms and to your own responsibility for them. Scentena processes and stores that content only to operate the service for you, as described in the Privacy Policy.

    Generated output is produced from a shared ingredient database and, for AI features, from a model that many people use. Similar inputs can produce similar output, so a generated formula is not exclusive to you and Scentena cannot promise it is original, unique, or free of anyone else’s intellectual property rights. If a formula matters commercially, check that independently.

    Scentena's intellectual property

    The Scentena name and branding, the application and its source code, the interface design, the curated ingredient dataset and its properties, the calculation logic, and the written material in the Learn library and elsewhere on the site belong to Scentena or its licensors. You may use them through the service as intended, but you may not copy, republish, redistribute, or build a competing product from them without permission.

    Safety and regulatory responsibility

    This is the section that matters most. Aroma materials are chemicals. They can irritate skin and eyes, cause allergic sensitisation that is permanent once it develops, be harmful if swallowed or inhaled, be flammable, and be hazardous to aquatic life. Alcohol-based perfume is flammable. A formula on a screen carries none of that risk; a bottle on your bench carries all of it.

    You are solely responsible for the safety, suitability, and legality of anything you make from a Scentena formula. Before you manufacture, apply to skin, wear, gift, sell, or otherwise distribute a fragrance, it is your responsibility to:

    • confirm the identity of every material you actually hold, including its CAS number, grade, and whether it is supplied neat or already diluted;
    • read the current safety data sheet, specification, allergen declaration, and IFRA certificate from your own supplier for your own batch, and follow the handling, storage, and disposal instructions in them;
    • check the current official IFRA Standards and their amendments for the correct product category for what you are making, and apply them yourself rather than relying on any figure shown in the application;
    • obtain any safety assessment, cosmetic product report, notification, registration, labelling, or responsible-person arrangement required where the product will be sold or used;
    • comply with every applicable law and regulation in your market, including cosmetics, chemical, consumer-protection, transport, and labelling rules;
    • carry out your own testing, including stability, compatibility, and any patch or wear testing appropriate to the product, and use suitable protective equipment and ventilation while working.

    The IFRA-aware caps, warnings, and estimates Scentena shows are an early screening aid based on the data stored in the application. They are not certification, not a safety assessment, and not a statement that a formula complies with any standard or law. Stored data can be incomplete or out of date, natural materials vary between batches and origins, suppliers ship different qualities and dilutions under the same name, and standards and regulations change. Where the application shows no warning, that means no issue was detected in its own data — not that the formula is safe.

    Scentena does not guarantee IFRA compliance or regulatory compliance of any kind, and nothing in the service should be presented to a customer, regulator, insurer, or retailer as evidence of compliance. If you are unsure, get a qualified safety assessment before you make or sell anything.

    Relying on generated output

    Generated formulas, briefs, material suggestions, and tips are starting points for your own bench work. AI-assisted output in particular can be inaccurate, incomplete, unbalanced, unsuitable for the product you intended, or confidently wrong about a material. Percentages are calculated from stored data and your inputs, and an error in either carries straight through to the result. Always check the arithmetic that matters, weigh accurately, work in small trials first, and evaluate the result over time before scaling anything up. Do not treat any output as a finished commercial recipe.

    Availability and changes to the service

    Scentena is offered as it is available. Features can be added, changed, limited, or removed, and several parts of the service — AI generation, social sign-in, billing, and advertising — depend on configuration and may be unavailable at times or not enabled at all. Maintenance, provider outages, and third-party failures can interrupt access. Where a change is significant and we can reasonably give notice, we will, but no particular uptime, response time, or continued availability of any feature is promised. Keep your own copy of formulas that matter to you by exporting them.

    Disclaimer of warranties

    To the fullest extent permitted by law, Scentena is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. Scentena does not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, that stored ingredient data or IFRA-related information is complete or current, or that any formula produced will be safe, stable, compliant, commercially viable, or fit for any purpose. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranties to be excluded, and where that is the case this section applies only so far as the law allows.

    Limitation of liability

    To the fullest extent permitted by law, Scentena and the people who operate it are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost sales, lost data, wasted materials, product recalls, or reputational harm, arising from your use of the service. That includes harm arising from any formula, calculation, safety indication, or AI output you relied on, and from any injury, allergic reaction, sensitisation, property damage, or regulatory action connected to a product you made.

    You agree to be responsible for the consequences of what you make and sell using Scentena. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, and some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

    Suspension and termination

    You may stop using Scentena at any time and delete your account from account settings. We may suspend or terminate access to an account that breaches these terms, abuses the service or its limits, or creates a security or legal risk. If an account is terminated, saved formulas held under it may be removed, so keep your own exports. The sections on your responsibilities, intellectual property, safety, warranties, and liability continue to apply after an account ends.

    Changes to these terms

    These terms will be updated as the service changes. The current version is always published on this page with a “last updated” date, and continuing to use Scentena after an update means the revised terms apply to you. If you do not accept a change, stop using the service and delete your account.
