    Top notes create the first trajectory

    Top notes are relatively volatile materials that are prominent immediately after application. Citrus oils, light aromatics, some aldehydes, and fresh green effects often live here. Their job is not merely to be loud; they introduce the theme and point toward the heart.

    A top-heavy formula may sparkle beautifully on a blotter and then feel empty. Support a volatile opening with related heart materials—for example, a citrus top can connect through petitgrain, linalool, tea facets, or transparent florals rather than ending abruptly.

    Middle notes carry identity

    Middle or heart notes become clearest as the opening recedes. Florals, spices, fruits, aromatics, and many green materials occupy this broad territory. The heart often carries the perfume's most recognizable idea and mediates between bright top notes and persistent bases.

    A strong heart is not necessarily a large percentage. High-impact materials may shape the theme at trace levels, while quieter materials provide volume. Judge by sensory effect and material strength, not by the number of rows assigned to each tier.

    Base notes shape the drydown

    Base materials evaporate slowly and remain after much of the opening has gone. Woods, balsams, musks, mossy effects, vanilla materials, and amber molecules can add persistence, warmth, texture, or diffusion. Some also act as bridges: a radiant woody material may be perceptible from the opening through the next day.

    Too much heavy base can suppress lift without necessarily making a perfume project farther. Longevity and projection are related but distinct, so build the base to support the concept rather than treating weight as an automatic performance upgrade.

    Compose transitions with shared facets

    Smooth perfumes often repeat an odour facet across stages. A fresh-spicy opening may lead into carnation and then a clove-like woody base; a green citrus can travel through leafy florals into mossy woods. These bridges make the change feel intentional.

    When a formula has a gap, identify what disappears and what arrives too suddenly. Add or adjust a material that shares facets with both sides, or reduce the element that is masking the transition. The goal is continuity, not equal percentages in three buckets.

    3. Without repeatedly smelling, assess at 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 2 hours, 8 hours, and the next day.
    4. Draw each material as a line whose thickness represents perceived strength; mark the periods where two or three lines overlap.
