    Projection describes how far a perfume radiates from its source; sillage is the trail it leaves as the wearer moves. Neither is identical to strength or longevity.     Diffusion depends on the whole formula

    Volatility helps molecules enter the air, but perceived diffusion also depends on odour threshold, material interactions, application, and airflow. Some modern woody, floral, and amber materials create radiance across several phases even though they are not simple top notes.

    More projection is not automatically better. An office scent, an intimate extrait, and an outdoor evening fragrance have different spatial goals. Define the intended distance and duration in the brief, then optimize toward that experience.

    Application advice and packaging also matter. A fine-mist atomizer can distribute a fragrance differently from a roller, splash, or solid format even when the concentrate is unchanged.

    A scent can last close to the blotter without projecting strongly. This observation matrix treats reach and persistence as separate measurements.

    1. Prepare coded blotters from two controlled, safety-checked trials using equal application amounts.
    2. At fixed times, first note whether each sample is detectable before bringing it close; avoid waving the blotter under the nose.
    3. Then assess close-up character and strength, taking fresh-air breaks between samples.
    4. Plot two lines for each trial: perceived reach and close-up strength. Compare their shapes rather than reducing the result to one score.

    What to record: room conditions, time, approximate assessment distance, close-up strength, recognisable character, evaluator fatigue, and any reversal on a second day.
